THE BROTHERHOOD
The Brotherhood of Saint Martin organizes the traditional Saint Martin’s Fair, which takes place every year at the beginning of November.
The day before the fair features another tradition introduced around twenty years ago: the Ox Roast Vigil. At the start of the evening, a whole ox is placed on a spit and slowly roasted throughout the night until the next day.
The Brotherhood of Saint Martin was founded on March 27, 2003, at the initiative of local figures wishing to preserve the traditions of the City of Vevey. Its founding assembly adopted the draft statutes on that date.
Membership in the Brotherhood is open to any individual or legal entity who wishes to join. Admission is officially confirmed during the swearing-in ceremony held at the next fair.
THE FAIR
An ancient fair granted privileges by the House of Savoy, which once ruled the region. These privileges allowed every resident of the Lake Geneva area to trade for one day free of taxes and duties.
The Saint Martin Fair has endured through the centuries, preserving many of its historic traditions. It long served as a meeting place between land and lake, bringing together mountain farmers, winemakers, and the fishermen of Lake Geneva.
The Fair traditionally takes place at the beginning of November. It has become a major autumn event, attracting ever-growing numbers of merchants and visitors.
The festivities begin early, at 7:00 a.m., with the Proclamation. Around 9:00 a.m., the Parade—featuring various associations in ceremonial dress, accompanied by marching bands and music groups—processes through the city before arriving at the Grenette (Market Square) for the official opening ceremony of the Saint Martin Fair.
Visitors can then enjoy tastings of Papet vaudois, spit-roasted beef, and wines from the city of Vevey.

Martin of Tours
Martin of Tours, born in 316 in Savaria, in the Roman province of Pannonia (present-day Hungary), and who died in Candes, Gaul, on November 8, 397, is one of the major saints of Christianity and, alongside Gregory of Tours, one of the most renowned bishops of Tours.
He is the patron saint of Tours, Buenos Aires, Rivière-au-Renard, Vevey, Mainz Cathedral, St. Martin's Cathedral, Utrecht, Lucca Cathedral, and the Basilica of San Martino.
Yesterday
And here comes good Saint Martin, heralding the arrival of winter with abundance, celebration, and good cheer.
A tradition of Vevey dating back to the Middle Ages and established by the Dukes of Savoy, the fair offered all those living along the lakeshore the opportunity to trade for a day, free from any taxes—a special privilege granted by the ruling lord.
A celebration of sharing and solidarity, but also of good bargains and joyful reunions among farmers from the plain, the mountains, and the vineyards.
Today
A regional tradition, the Fair continues a long-standing spirit of meeting, exchange, and sharing. Like its patron, Saint Martin, it seeks to welcome everyone.
Even today, it remains a link between town and countryside, between lake and mountains, between merchants and visitors. Above all, it reflects the spirit of the City of Vevey itself—poised between the Riviera and the Pays-d’Enhaut, between Vaud and Fribourg, between urban life and agricultural heritage.
All the children of the city know this Fair well, as schools traditionally grant the Tuesday afternoon off. Each year, pupils also take part in the Grand Parade on Saturday and the Children’s Torchlight Parade on Friday evening.
An entire region comes together in what becomes one of Europe’s largest open-air market squares.

Sur le Quai Perdonnet
Ou celui d’Arabie,
C’était le paradis
Des grands et des petits …
Bien douce était la vie ! …

Pour être dans le vent,
Il était important
D’établir un programme …
On était choralien,
Gymnaste ou musicien
Ou champion de la rame …
Quand venait le sam’di,
Tiré à quatre plis,
On emm’nait la copine
Boire un verre aux 3 Rois
Ou bien au cinéma
Voir “Les deux orphelines”.
V.
Et quand il faisait beau,
On prenait le bateau,
C’était pas pour Cythère,
Mais pour Le Bouveret,
D’où l’on voyait Vevey
Briller dans la lumière …
Le soir au Casino,
Les perles d’un piano
Nous disaient en musique :
Profitez du moment,
Mordez à pleines dents
Dans le fruit chimérique …
VI.
Kermesse en Gilamont,
Le bal de l’Aviron,
Les soirées à la plage,
Tout le pat’lin dansait,
Du petit freluquet
Jusqu’aux grands personnages.
Les temps ont bien changés,
La ville s’est parée
De nouveaux édifices …
Et devant sa télé
Chacun peut s’évader
Au gré de ses caprices …
VII.
Et le soir on s’endort
A l’heure où sur le port,
Dans un rayon de lune,
Un cygne va glissant
Sur le lac scintillant,
Cherchant bonne fortune …
Et seul j’ai refermé,
Le cœur un peu serré,
Mon beau livre d’images …
Souvenir d’un enfant
Qui n’avait que vingt ans,
C’était le bon vieux temps …
